Reggie Beeson reports that D’wild Ride, a
4-year-old daughter of D’wildcat— Summer Storm, by Peace
For Peace, bred in the name of his Sophian Stables, was
runner-up in the $70,000 Red Cross Stakes at Monmouth Park on
May 10. She came four-wide into the stretch and fought gamely
to the wire, missing by a head. Trained by Joe Orseno, she went
on to finish second in allowance/optional claiming company at
Philadelphia Park on July 13.
Jim Chandley’s homebred Kanasdatis (Austin
Powers-Ire—Sarcelle’s Traffic, by River Traffic) was moved from
third to second place upon the disqualification of the winner in
the $70,000 Indiana First Lady Stakes for registered
Indiana-bred 3-year-old fillies at Indiana Downs on July 13.
Michael Leahy trains that stakes-placed runner, as well
as additional Chandley homebreds, including Suyeta
(Indian Charlie—American Moud, by Quiet American), who finished
second in a one-mile turf allowance at Ellis Park on July 19 and
third at Indiana Downs on July 1. Leahy sent out Chandley’s
Forest Tour (Forestry—Tour, by Forty Niner) to a
second-place finish in a five and a half-furlong turf allowance
at Ellis Park on July 11. Chandley’s foal report includes
fillies by Orientate and Bandini, produced, respectively, by his
mares Masa (Dixie Union) and Dixie Lass (Misbah).
He also has colts by Invasor (Arg) and Misbah.
His mare Working Title (Lord At War-Arg) had a colt by
Jump Start.
Tom and Denise Walsh were rewarded when Lemon Cream
Pie (Lemon Drop Kid—Vennila Cream, by Valid Appeal) won an
allowance race at Belmont Park on July 18 going a mile and an
eighth on the inner turf. The 4-year-old gelding sprinted clear,
set a moderate pace for a half, shook loose on the turn and drew
away under good handling. He scored by three and three-quarters
lengths. Owned by Denise Walsh and John Padden, Lemon Cream
Pie is trained by James Jerkens.
Sandy and Joanne Dew are avidly following the campaign of
Jacob’s Run, a 5-year-old son of Gulch out of their
multiple stakes winner Cozy Blues (by Cure the Blues).
Claimed from the Dews earlier this year by C T C Racing Stables
and trainer Cody Autrey, Jacob’s Run won for a claiming tag on
May 4 at Philadelphia Park and returned to finish third in a
Delaware Park allowance race on July 1.
The Dews also bred and sold the 4-year-old Estrella Victoria
(Changeintheweather—Phone Chances, by Phone Trick), who
placed second in a one-mile maiden special weight at Presque
Isle Downs on May 15 for owners Drake Racing Stable and Sure
Bet, who purchased her from the Dews at the end of this year’s
Tampa Bay meet. She is trained by Tim Girten.
Cozy Blues’s 6-year-old son Thalian Hall (by
Theatrical-Ire) was second at Thistledown on May 16. Owned by
Drake Racing Stable and trained by Shirley K. Girten-Drake,
Thalian Hall was also sold by the Dews at the 2009 Tampa Bay
meet.
The Dews are optimistic about the future of Cozy Blues’s
2-year-old daughter Blues Legend (by Mr. Greeley), who
began breezing this summer at Arlington Park. On July 18, she
was timed in :47 3/5 for four furlongs—the second-fastest of 51
horses at that distance.
James E. Jones sends word that his mare Lois Dancer (by
Distorted Humor) foaled a bay colt by Oratory on April 12.
Jenkin Jones, a son of Malibu Moon owned by Jones in
partnership with Country Life Farm, overcame a rough trip to
finish second in a starter handicap at Charles Town on July 4.
He is trained by Timothy Grams.
Kenan Rand reports that Crimson Star, bred in the
name of his Nutbush Farms, is continuing his productive
4-year-old campaign. The Smoke Glacken gelding out of
Castle Gardens-Ire, by Common Grounds finished in the money at
Hollywood Park on July 19 and June 28 after winning at that
track in May for owner Thomas F. Metzger and trainer Julio
Canani. Rand adds that his mare September Charmer
(by Septieme Ciel) has been pronounced in foal to Tiz Wonderful
for 2010. Castle Gardens was bred to Notional.
William Thompson had two recent wins by homebreds racing
under the banner of his Maple Lane Farm LLC:
Eight-year-old Dumbledore (Prospect Bay—Derby Tie, by
Black Tie Affair-Ire) scored at Churchill Downs on May 9 for
trainer Andrew McKeever. Ariana D (Rock Slide—Derby
Tie, by Black Tie Affair-Ire), a 3-year-old filly trained by
Merrill Scherer, won a maiden special weight at Presque Isle
Downs on July 9.
Shirley Lathrop’s Mischievious. a 3-year-old
daughter of Maria’s Mon—Bonnie Byerly (by Dayjur), bred in the
name of Lathrop’s Longleaf Pine Farm, placed third in allowance
company at Calder on May 8. The trainer is Ronald Spatz.
Al and Beth Muirhead report that their mare Frisky
Cheerleader (Roar—Special Power, by Lines of Power) was bred
back to Quiet American after producing a big strapping colt by
Congrats on April 8. The mare’s stakes-winning daughter
Special Cheers (by Concerto) has been retired from racing
and is in foal to Gulch for 2010.
